Why Puerto Escondido is the "Anti-Tulum" You Need to Visit in 2026

Okay, real talk: everyone is obsessed with the Mexican Caribbean right now, but if you're over the crowds, the rising prices, and the "seaweed season" (sargassum) that seems to get worse every year, it’s time to look West. Specifically, to the Oaxacan coast.

I just got back from a deep dive into Puerto Escondido, and honestly? It’s giving me the vibes I used to find in Bali ten years ago. It’s a surf town at heart, but it’s grown into this perfect mix of chill beach days, insane food, and a nightlife scene that doesn't feel like a Vegas nightclub.

Why Puerto Escondido right now?

  • Zero Seaweed: While the Caribbean side is battling piles of brown sargassum, the Pacific is crystal clear. 10/10 for swimming (at the right beaches!).
  • Budget-Friendly: You can still grab a street taco for $1.50 and a beer for $2. Even the "fancy" dinners at La Punta are half what you'd pay in Tulum.
  • The Vibe: It’s raw, it’s authentic, and it’s beautiful. No mega-resorts blocking the view.

The Beaches (Pick Your Vibe)

Puerto isn't just one beach—it’s a collection of coves, and choosing the right one is everything.

  • Playa Zicatela: This is for the pros. The "Mexican Pipeline" is world-famous. Don't swim here unless you want to get tossed, but definitely come for sunset drinks to watch the surfers.
  • Playa Carrizalillo: My absolute favorite. You have to walk down about 160 steps to get there, but the turquoise water and gentle waves are worth every step. Pro Tip: Get there by 9 AM to snag a lounge chair.
  • La Punta: The southern end of Zicatela. It’s unpaved roads, barefoot vibes, and the best food in town. Perfect for shoulder-season travelers who want a community feel.

Real Talk: The Logistics

Getting there: You can fly direct into PXM airport from Mexico City. It’s a tiny airport—you’ll be out and in a taxi in 15 minutes.

Transportation: Skip the rental car. Use the colectivos (shared trucks) for 10-15 pesos (less than $1) or take a taxi for around $3-5 to get between beaches.

When to go: February is peak season for a reason—the weather is perfect (mid-80s) and the whales are migrating! If you want a deal, aim for May or November.

The Verdict

If you want a manicured resort experience, stick to Cancun. But if you want a beach trip that feels like an actual adventure—where you eat the best fish tacos of your life on a plastic stool and watch the sun melt into the Pacific—get to Puerto Escondido. 10/10 would go back tomorrow.
