Sayulita vs. Puerto Escondido: Which Mexico Beach is Actually Worth Your PTO?

Malia SantosBy Malia Santos

Okay, real talk: If you’re planning a Mexico trip for March, you’re probably staring at two tabs right now—Sayulita and Puerto Escondido. I get it. They’re both iconic, they both have that Pacific coast magic, and they both promise better tacos than whatever you’re eating right now.

But here’s the thing: they are completely different vibes. Pick the wrong one, and you’ll spend your whole vacation wishing you were at the other. I’ve spent way too much time in both, so let’s break it down so you don't waste your precious PTO.

The Vibe Check

Sayulita: It’s the "boho-chic" darling of Nayarit. Think colorful flags (papel picado) over every street, boutique shops, and a town square that never sleeps. It’s compact, walkable, and very "Instagrammable." But—and this is a big "but"—it’s crowded. Like, really crowded in March. You’re going for the energy, the nightlife, and the social scene.

Puerto Escondido: This is for the soul-seekers and the surfers. It’s spread out, a bit more rugged, and feels more "authentic" (though that’s changing fast). March is the sweet spot here before the massive summer swells hit. It’s less about the "town center" and more about the different beach neighborhoods like La Punta or Zicatela.

The Water & Sand (The Malia Scale)

If you've followed me for five minutes, you know I’m a snob about water clarity.

  • Sayulita: Honestly? 5/10. The sand is golden and pretty, but the water can be a bit murky because of the bay. It’s fine for a dip, but don't expect Maldives-level visibility.
  • Puerto Escondido: 8/10. Especially at Playa Carrizalillo. You have to hike down a few hundred stairs, but the water is turquoise, calm, and crystal clear. It’s one of the best swimming holes in all of Mexico.

The Cost (Real Numbers)

Mexico isn't as cheap as it was five years ago, but your dollar goes further in PE.

  • Sayulita: Expect to pay "tourist prices." A decent dinner will run you $20-30 USD. A boutique hotel? $150+/night.
  • Puerto Escondido: You can still find $4 fish tacos and $50/night guesthouses that are actually cute. It’s much friendlier for the budget traveler.

The Verdict

Go to Sayulita if: You want a party, you love shopping for handmade jewelry, and you don't mind sharing the beach with a thousand new friends. It’s 10/10 for a girls' trip.

Go to Puerto Escondido if: You want to watch the best sunsets of your life at La Punta, you want to learn to surf (or watch the pros at Zicatela), and you prefer a more laid-back, spread-out feel. It’s 10/10 for the chill traveler.

Pro Tip: If you pick Puerto Escondido, stay in La Punta. It’s the perfect middle ground between the "too-intense" surf scene of Zicatela and the quiet of the local areas. And whatever you do, eat at Fish Taco Makata—thank me later.
