Quick Tip

Fill reusable water bottles ¾ full and freeze overnight. They act as ice packs in your bag and melt into cold drinking water all day.

The night before every beach day, I fill my reusable water bottles about three-quarters of the way up and stick them in the freezer. That's it. That's the tip. But let me tell you why this single habit has made every beach bag I've ever packed better.

💡Fill reusable water bottles ¾ full and freeze them the night before. They act as ice packs in your bag, keep everything cold without the soggy mess, and slowly melt into ice-cold drinking water all day long.

When I was working as a concierge in Maui, this was the first thing I'd tell guests who asked about beach days on a budget. You don't need a fancy cooler. You don't need to buy a bag of ice. Frozen bottles do the job — and they do it better.

Here's what you're actually getting out of one bottle in the freezer:

  • Free ice pack. Lay it next to your snacks, sunscreen, or anything that needs to stay cool. No separate ice pack to remember.
  • No soggy bag situation. Regular ice melts into water that leaks everywhere. A frozen bottle sweats a little but doesn't flood your bag.
  • Cold water on demand. By hour two, the outside is melted and drinkable. By hour four, it's perfectly cold all the way through. Hydration that earns itself.
  • Lighter than ice. A bag of ice weighs several pounds and is awkward to carry. Toss two frozen bottles in your tote — done.

The only rule: leave that quarter-inch of headspace at the top. Water expands when it freezes, and a bottle filled to the brim will crack on you. Ask me how I know. (Once. I learned once.)

Spring break is coming. Do this tonight.
